In what seems to be a tectonic shift towards peace in Kashmir, hundreds of youth from the state now want to shun the gun in Pakistan and return home to the valley.
70 years old Abdul Gani, of Thanala village in Bhaderwah, has been running from pillar to post, pleading the government to help him get his son - Amjad - back from the training camps in Pakistan.
In the late 90s Amjad allegedly went across the border for arms training and his family back home has lost track of him since. However last month the family received a letter purportedly from Amjad which expresses his desperation to return home.
"We cannt tell you the pain we felt when he went away. We hope he comes back soon," he says.
Gani is not the only one to receive such a letter - many other families who lost their sons to jehad have received similar letters. Each pleading with their families to convince the authorities to allow them to surrender at the Line of Control.
